It hit me this morning . . . Unlike LIFESTYLES OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS – where those in the money have personal chefs, massage therapists at their beck and call, and enough time and money in the world to make it all easy, being Fit and Lean doesn’t get delivered to you on a platter and first requires that you develop HABITS. And habits will eventually lead to it becoming a lifestyle . . . Then you never know, a TV show could be made about you called LIFESTYLES OF THE FIT AND FABULOUS!
The thing is . . . You don’t have to be in love with fitness, or be crazy about clean eating for it to work for you. You don’t have to be cool enough, fit enough, strong enough to get started . . . because developing habits is what gets you started and moving you towards cool, fit and lean – or wherever you want it to take you. Best of all HABITS are what will keep you fit, lean and fabulous. There is no ‘do it for three months then cruise forever’ model – I mean, what could possibly go wrong with that scenario! Getting there and maintaining it takes constant work. Habit is what will make it feel less like work and more like something that you just ‘do’ – you know, like brushing your teeth.
Here are some ideas to help get you started to being Fit and Lean:
Develop a system that helps you train consistently CrossFit Access uses a booking system. People book their training sessions in advance. We have been assured by our members that this is a great way of making sure they get their training in. Like making any other appointment, once it’s made, it’s mentally a lot harder for you to back out of it.
Find a friend You don’t have to do this all on your lonesome. I can pretty much guarantee you have at least one friend who is wanting to get started as well. Doing it with a mate has the same effect as booking sessions, you are less likely to back out if you are letting someone down other than just yourself.
Consistent and considered, not frantic and unsustainable You are better off starting just a little slowly, maybe three times a week and setting yourself up for success, rather than going hell-for-leather to start with and having your body and your mind throw a tanty and making you too tired and sore to carry on.
80% clean eating – 100% of the time There is no getting around it, you have to be careful of what you put in your mouth. If your food is 80% good – and by good we mean nourishing, free from artificial rubbish and good for you, then you have made a really good start. Remember aiming for perfect is both mentally exhausting and not necessarily physically good for you either. 80% is do-able, sustainable and helps you get results. Prepare your food Both setting some time aside and coming up with a menu for the week, then prepping in advance by going out and purchasing required items and as much as possible pre-cutting/cooking/portioning helps the majority of people stay on track. This way, when life gets busy during the week, you don’t have to spend the mental energy thinking about what to cook, nor as much time getting it underway – because most of it has been done on the weekend. That way you can keep your planned indulgences to something extra delicious, rather than having to put your crème brule aside because you ate Burger King after finding yourself too busy to cook on Tuesday! These 5 Food Prep Tips will help you on your way.
Get realistic about your food and alcohol intake And we are talking about what and how much you consume here. In the end you can eat wholesome food and still put on weight – if you fall into the trap of eating much of your food from the wholesome treat category that is. And as for the grog, well sugar, sugar, sugar!!! (They don’t call it a beer gut for nothing folks, and really the wine isn’t any better).
Get outside – enjoy what our outdoors has to offer Being active can be done almost anywhere. We are especially lucky to have great outdoor spaces around us – go out and play in them. The sun, the fresh air, the earth under your feet all help you feel alive and refreshed. You don’t have to go back to ‘full on kid’ climbing the jungle gym if you don’t want to, but get out there, try new things, get out of your comfort zone a little – that really is where the fun in life is to be found! So we will see you on the fit and healthy side folks, we just know you are going to make it there! Psst – will keep a spot on that TV show for ya!
