It’s winter folks!
The cold, the grey skies and rain puts us on a downer, bummed, a little grumpy even. There are less smiles about, people walk around with their heads down just trying to get where they are going, without taking the time to appreciate their environment, or are bashing each other behind the anonymity of a keyboard on social media.
We do less, feel less, are less nice when the weather affects our mood. And it does, it affects a huge group of people. Some worse than others, but a good portion of us get the wintertime blues. It’s called Seasonal Depression and it is a thing! We know this, and we know that mental fitness is effected by our bodies. It is the reason physical fitness is important. Our physiology affects our psychology. They are connected. And while winter may leave you feeling like you want to stay at home in front of the telly, couch-potato-ing actually compounds the feelings of lethargy, despondency and general ‘blah-ness’(we realise that isn’t an actual medical term).
So if you suffer from Winter ‘miffy-ness’ or feel you get full on Seasonal Affective Disorder, CrossFit can actually help.
Exercise releases endorphins which act on our bodies in a couple of ways. You may have heard of ‘runners high’ – well, it’s not just confined to running. Ask any CrossFitter and it’s that high that keeps them coming back for more. The reference to a ‘high’ comes from the fact that endorphins lock into opioid receptor cells (note the opioid class of drugs fits them as well, but we don’t recommend those). What they do when locked in is diminish the perception of pain (yay) and produce a euphoric feeling in your body (huge yay!).
Now while it appears you can get the same feeling from your neighbourhood dealer, CrossFit has a few additional benefits. Firstly you aren’t going to get arrested for possession, secondly you don’t have to meet up on street corners with people who have teeth missing and thirdly you won’t end up with your own teeth missing. On top of that however, CrossFit significantly improves self esteem, which is vital when you are feeling a little low. It also improves the quality of your sleep, so you wake feeling better instead of worse. Most importantly though there is the community factor.
Our box (gym in CrossFit Speak) is a family, the kind of family you choose. We are all there to support each other, we are friends and comrades. We get each other through the workouts and even the tough times. We have each others backs, and we’ve got yours too. There is no need to go it alone and no need to give into winter doldrums – when you’re with us, we’ve got you! Come sweat with us and kick the winter blues!!
