If you've walked past a CrossFit gym and wondered what actually goes on inside, you're not alone. From the outside it can look like a lot of barbells, noise and sweat. From the inside, it's a structured hour, run by a coach, where everyone works hard at their own level. Here's what a class at CrossFit Access involves, from the moment you walk in to the final rep.
What happens in a CrossFit class in Wangara?
Every CrossFit class at CrossFit Access is coach-led and runs for roughly 60 minutes. Each one follows a planned progression with the same basic structure:
- a warm-up,
- movement instruction and a demonstration,
- a strength or skill piece,
- the workout of the day.
The workout changes every day. CrossFit is constantly varied, so one day might be heavy squats and the next might be rowing, gymnastics and kettlebells. What doesn't change is the structure, and the fact that a coach is with you the whole way through.
The warm-up
Your coach takes the whole class through a warm-up designed around that day's training. It gets your heart rate up, loosens you off and rehearses the positions you're about to use. If the session has overhead work, for example, the warm-up gets your shoulders ready for it.
The briefing and demo
Before anyone touches a barbell, the coach explains the session and demonstrates the movements. You'll see what good technique looks like, hear what to focus on, and get the chance to ask questions. This is also when your coach works out how to adjust the session for you, which we'll come back to.
Strength or skill
Most classes include a strength or skill portion. That could be Olympic weightlifting, deadlifts or squats, bodyweight strength, or a skill like handstand push-ups. This part is usually slower and more technical. You're building strength and refining movement, with the coach moving around the room correcting positions and helping you choose the right weight.
The workout
Then comes the part most people picture when they think of CrossFit: the workout of the day. Workouts are usually anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, sometimes longer, and combine functional movements drawn from gymnastics, weightlifting, rowing and more.
This is where the energy in the room lifts. Everyone starts together, and the people who finish first stay to cheer on those still working. Throughout, the coach supervises and corrects your movement so you stay safe even when you're tired.
How your coach scales it for you
This is the part that makes CrossFit work for a beginner-friendly gym. Every workout can be adjusted in weight, intensity and the mechanics of a movement to suit your experience and fitness. A complete beginner and a competitive CrossFitter can do the same workout, in the same class, and both get a good session.
Scaling might mean a lighter weight, fewer reps, a different version of a movement, or a substitute that works around an injury. You don't have to work it out yourself. That's your coach's job.
Who you'll train with
Classes are run in small groups, which is how you get to know people quickly. You'll train alongside beginners, people coming back after years off, and members who've been with us for a long time. The common thread is a community that's friendly, judgement-free and genuinely invested in each other's progress. It's why we say we're more than a gym, more like a family.
How often should you come?
If you're starting out, we recommend 3 to 4 classes a week, working up to 5 a week after your first few months. Your body needs time to adapt to training at this intensity, so recovery days matter. Your coach can help you plan a routine that fits your goals and your week.
Class times that fit around work and family
Classes run weekdays from 5am to 7:30pm and Saturdays from 6 to 9am. Whether you train before work, mid-morning or in the evening, there's a session that fits. Members book classes through our members app, so it's easy to lock in your spot.
More than CrossFit classes
CrossFit classes are the heart of what we do, but they aren't the only option at our fitness centre in Wangara:
- HYROX: specialised sessions for running, sled pushes, rowing, burpees and the rest of the HYROX race. No experience needed.
- CrossFit Youth: classes for kids aged 8 to 14, focused on how well they move rather than how much or how fast.
- Personal training: one-on-one, or with one or two friends, for beginners who want extra support or athletes chasing an edge.
- Nutrition coaching: personalised plans and ongoing support to back up your training.
How to try your first class
If you're new to CrossFit, you won't be thrown straight into a class. Every beginner starts with a free one-on-one intro with one of our coaches, then builds the foundations before joining the group. We've explained exactly how that works in Is CrossFit Good for Beginners? What Your First Week at CrossFit Access Looks Like.
If you've trained before, whether that's CrossFit, F45, Fitstop or barbell work, skip the intro and grab a free three-day pass to try our classes for yourself.
